Parent Education Webinar: What you need to know about Wills and Trusts

Claire F Baylis | Published on 12/27/2021

Join our fellow Las Madres member, attorney Deborah Azar, as she shares her expertise on Estate Planning with us in a webinar on "What Every Parent Needs to Know About Wills and Trusts."
If you want to have a say on what would happen to your dependent children and/or to your assets if something were to happen to you, or on who would take care of your financial, legal and health care decisions if you're alive but unable to do so, then you'll want to hear more about Estate Planning.

The speaker will cover the following topics and there will be a Q&A:
Goals of Estate Planning
• Guardianship
Deciding guardianship for any minor children. If you don’t decide, the state is likely to make that decision for you.
• Avoiding probate
Probate is the process used by the courts to determine the distribution of certain assets. It is expensive and takes a long time.
• Enacting Your Wishes
Ensuring that your assets will be distributed to your loved ones as you see fit. You might want certain assets to go to certain people. Maybe there is a charity you would like to see get part of your estate.
• Planning for incapacity
Describing your wishes regarding life support. It allows your wishes to be followed and frees your loved ones from being forced to deal with the decision. Having a power of attorney avoids having to go to court if you become incapacitated.

Speaker: Deborah Azar has been practicing law for over ten years, focusing on helping families with estate planning, and holds an LL.M. from the London School of Economics and a J.D. from Santa Clara University.
